Top Gold Watches for Men – A Curated Magnificent Seven
For many luxury watch enthusiasts, gold watches are like Bovril, you either love them or hate them. Personally, I love them and the huge range of luxury gold watches in the market – rose gold watches, yellow gold watches and white gold watches – provides some beautiful choices of gold watches for men to suit any environment and every occasion.
I’ve selected 7 of my favourite luxury gold watches to take you through, ranging from 9ct gold watches for men like the iconic Casio A159 at just £70 through to the rose gold Patek Philippe 5961R sporting 58 diamond baguettes at a cool £142,500!
Casio A159
The nostalgic PVD 9ct yellow gold-plated Casio A159 has a distinct 80s feel and is worn by many tech-savvy watch lovers that crave for simplicity and style, at a very affordable level.
Oozing a cool vibe, the Casio A159’s quartz movement is reliable and the backlit digital display alongside the gold-plated stainless-steel bracelet is instantly recognisable. This Casio gold watch delivers all the basics with a bit of retro class, at a price less than a good night out! For these reasons it has to feature in my top gold watches for men.
Omega Sedna™ Planet Ocean 600m
The 43.5m Sedna™ gold OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean is a beautiful luxury sports watch that I would love to be seen out wearing. It truly depicts OMEGA’s maritime legacy and its Master Chronometer status demonstrates it has passed the 8 rigorous tests set by METAS, The Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology.
The deep blue ceramic dial and blue leather strap with rubber lining and an 18K Sedna™ gold clasp, perfectly compliment the SednaTM gold case and crystal white Arabic numerals.I love luxury watches where the back of the watch is as beautiful as the front, and that is definitely the case with this Omega gold watch. The transparent alveol screw-in caseback provides a perfect view of the OMEGA Master Chronometer calibre 8901 movement. At £28,500 this is one hell of a watch to be nurtured and enjoyed by any luxury watch enthusiast. I love it.
Rolex Everose Sky-Dweller
One of the most popular luxury gold watches around the world is Rolex’s Everose gold 42mm Sky-Dweller. This Sky-Dweller looks beautifully proportioned and refined and has a certain class and confidence about it.
The chocolate dial and jubilee oyster bracelet sets this stunning watch off beautifully and the detail in this watch is just amazing. The fixed red triangle on the dial indicates the chosen reference time and the red rectangle in one of the 12 Arabic numeral windows indicates the month, an innovative characteristic of the Saros annual calendar.
At £46,300 this gorgeous Everose gold luxury Rolex watch doesn’t come cheaply, but then every pound spent does exude class again and again. A real favourite for Roger Federer!
Cartier Santos Dumont
Cartier produce some amazing luxury gold watches and Cartier’s extra-large Santos Dumont is a stunning rose gold luxury dress watch.
I just adore the blued steel sword-shaped hands and the beaded crown set with a vibrant blue sapphire cabochon. At 46.6mm this luxury rose gold watch is quite a size and with the grey-alligator skin strap it will look amazing alongside a tuxedo or sharp business suit.
At £16,100 I think this Cartier gold watch is really good value. A must have watch in my magnificent seven luxury gold watch choices.
Bremont Terra Nova Jimmy Chin Chronograph
It’s great to see a British Watch in my top luxury gold watch choices and I love Bremont’s Terra Nova Jimmy Chin Chronograph in rose gold. Bremont only made 15 pieces, so this limited-edition watch is rare and packs a £26,500 price to match.
A real adventurers luxury gold watch, this 42.55mm chronograph in rose gold is exquisite. The exhibition case back on this luxury gold watch is decorated with an image of the Teton Mountain Range, a very special place for adventurer Jimmy Chin.
This is a real collectors piece and I can see this watch having a strong residual value in the future. Definitely one for the luxury gold watch collector.
IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide
Of all the luxury gold watches on the market, my absolute favourite is IWC’s Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide.
With a 44.6mm 18ct 5N gold case, this beautiful luxury watch is a stunner, with exquisite looks & design. Another watch with a beautiful back too. The see through sapphire glass back provides a wonderful view of the 82835 calibre 60 hour power reserve movement.
The time keeping is just stunning….amazingly the moon phase & its mirror image, which show the state of the moon in both the northern & southern hemisphere, only needs adjusting by 1 day every 577 years!
At £29,900 IWC’s Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide is in the same price range as a Steel Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph. Personally, for me it’s the IWC every day of the week!
Patek Philippe 5961R Chronograph Annual Calendar
The king of luxury gold watches could well be the rose gold Patek Philippe 5961R. This stunning luxury watch has 58 diamond baguettes and at a cool £142,500, it’s equivalent to the price of half a house!
The detail and precision in this luxury black and gold wrist watch is incredible. The clarity of the ebony black opaline face on this 40.5mm luxury watch is exquisite. Add to that the 36 diamond baguettes in the bezel, 22 diamond baguettes in the watch clasp, the flyback chronograph with annual calendar and you have a luxury wrist watch to admire for life.
It’s no wonder that after 175 years of luxury watchmaking, Patek Philippe has consistently remained one of the most admired brands by watch connoisseurs and collectors all over the world.
Gold vs. steel – Which holds value better?
It’s interesting to sign off with a look at residual values for men’s gold wrist watches compared to steel luxury watches. Men’s gold watches naturally benefit from the intrinsic value of the gold (which can fluctuate up or down, of course). These watches often appeal to a more niche audience and may be seen as less practical for daily wear compared to steel models.
In terms of market size, the market for steel luxury watches is much bigger than the gents gold watch market, which, when combined with a premium brand with strong following (e.g. Rolex, Omega, IWC, Panerai), supports higher residual value performance for luxury steel watches. However, investing in a men’s gold watch still offers the unique advantage of owning a luxurious and potentially valuable piece that can stand the test of time and becoming a loved antique gold watch, both in craftsmanship and desirability.
Overall, if you love the look and feel of the watch on your wrist and you buy a premium luxury watch brand, then the actual cost of luxury watch ownership, over time, is not as great as many people think.
